What Natsume's Book of Friends: The Waking Rock and the Strange Visitor Is About
A film made of two short stories. In the first, Natsume meets a small youkai called Mitsumi in a forest; Mitsumi has been given the task of waking the divine youkai Iwatetsu from a deep sleep, and Natsume, unable to stop thinking about it, decides to help. In the second, a mysterious visitor appears to Tanuma, coming almost every day, talking a little and leaving. Natsume, who knows the visitor is a youkai, worries, while Tanuma enjoys the exchanges. The trouble is that Tanuma’s health slowly begins to fail. Hideki Ito directed, working from Yuki Midorikawa’s long-running manga and keeping the spirit of the series: not horror but a gentle, melancholy neighbourliness with the unseen.
