What Naughty Marietta Is About
A French princess dodging an arranged marriage takes her maid's name and sails for colonial New Orleans. Pirates intercept the ship, and the man who gets her out of it is Captain Richard Warrington. This 1935 adaptation of Victor Herbert's 1910 operetta put Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy on screen together for the first time, and the pairing became the most profitable musical partnership MGM had, billed for years as the singing sweethearts. The best known numbers in the score are all present, among them Ah Sweet Mystery of Life and Italian Street Song. It was nominated for Best Picture and won the Academy Award for sound recording.
