What Never Let Go Is About
John Cummings is a cosmetics salesman who is not good at it and who is still paying off his car. The car is stolen, it was not insured, and the police could not be less interested. He goes after it himself and ends up at Lionel Meadows, who runs a stolen-car operation in London and is a sadist long used to getting away with it. John Guillermin's 1960 film is one of the harder British noirs. The surprise is Peter Sellers: no comedy at all, playing Meadows with a coldness that never cracks, and nothing like the Sellers audiences knew. It is built on one small man's stubbornness and it gets steadily more painful.
