What The Blue Max Is About
1918, the German air force. Bruno Stachel is looked down on by the officers because he comes from the lower class, and he has no time for the unwritten chivalry of flying. All he wants is twenty kills and the Pour le Mérite; the film's title is that medal's unofficial name. George Peppard plays Stachel, James Mason the general and Ursula Andress the general's wife. John Guillermin directed, with a score by Jerry Goldsmith. This is not a heroic pilot story: it looks at what ambition does to the people around it. The flying was shot with real biplanes.
