What I Was Monty's Double Is About

In 1944 British intelligence works out a plan: find a man who closely resembles Field Marshal Montgomery, send him to the Mediterranean, and mislead the Germans about where the landings will come. The man they want is an actor named M. E. Clifton James, who has played nothing but small parts. James takes the job and starts learning how to look like Montgomery. The most interesting thing about John Guillermin's film is this: Clifton James plays himself in it, and also plays Montgomery. The real event and the re-enactment meet in the same person. John Mills plays the intelligence officer. The telling builds tension without showing the war; the question is how long a man can keep the part up.
