What The Day They Robbed the Bank of England Is About
London at the turn of the century. Three men are sent by the Irish Republican Army to take every ounce of gold from the vaults of the Bank of England. Norgate, who leads them, finds the weak point: an old forgotten sewer running directly beneath the vaults. John Guillermin builds the robbery like an engineering problem, and the tension comes not from guns but from measurements, tides and timing. Peter O’Toole appears in one of the early roles of his career. The result is a cooler headed example of the British heist tradition of the forties and fifties.
