What Night Sun Is About
Baron Sergio has a comfortable life at the king’s court in front of him when he learns that the woman he is to marry has been the king’s mistress, and he gives all of it up to take orders and withdraw into a hermitage. A reputation for holiness gathers around him while he keeps failing to get free of desire, and in the end, judging himself unworthy of the reverence, he takes to the road. Paolo and Vittorio Taviani adapted Tolstoy’s Father Sergius and moved it from Russia to the kingdom of Naples. Julian Sands, Nastassja Kinski and Charlotte Gainsbourg play it. It showed out of competition at Cannes in 1990, with every Russian location replaced by one in southern Italy.
