1816. Napoleon has fallen and the old dynasties are back. Fulvio Imbriani comes from a noble family and has spent his years in revolutionary organisations. Out of prison, he returns to the family house. He is tired; he no longer wants to save anyone, he wants to be comfortable. But his old comrades will not leave him alone. They are planning a rising in the south and they draw him into it. He tries to run from them and from himself at once, and every move he makes gets somebody else killed. Paolo and Vittorio Taviani direct; a hundred and eleven minutes, with Marcello Mastroianni as Fulvio and music by Ennio Morricone. The title is the opening line of the Marseillaise as an Italian ear wrote it down: even the slogan of the revolution is now being misheard.
