What Nise: The Heart of Madness Is About
Dr Nise da Silveira comes out of prison and returns to a psychiatric hospital outside Rio. The new treatments of the day are electroshock and lobotomy, and she refuses to use them. As punishment she is put in charge of the occupational therapy wing nobody wants, and there she gives the patients paint, brushes and paper. The pictures that came out of it now hang in a museum in Rio. Her colleagues mock her and she carries on. A real person; Nise da Silveira changed Brazilian psychiatry. The hospital conditions and the violence are heavy, but care sits at the centre.
