What Nô Is About

The account runs in two cities at once. In October 1970 Sophie is on stage at the world fair in Osaka. She is an actress from Montreal. The piece she is in is a farce by Feydeau. She learns that she is pregnant. She telephones Montreal. Her boyfriend Michel is there. Michel is watching the October Crisis on television. Martial law has been declared. He is inside a circle of Quebec separatists, and a plan for a bomb comes out of it. The Japanese passages and the Montreal ones cut across each other. The account comes from a stage work by Lepage himself, and the title looks two ways at once, to the Noh theatre of Japan and to the no of Quebec. Anne-Marie Cadieux and Alexis Martin appear in the eighty five minute film, a Canadian production Robert Lepage finished in 1998.
