What Possible Worlds Is About

George Barber's body is found with the brain removed. Two detectives start investigating. At the same time the film shows George living several separate lives: a stockbroker in one, a scientist in another. In each of them he meets the same woman, Joyce. But Joyce is a different person each time: sometimes she knows him, sometimes she has never met him, sometimes she is cold, sometimes in love. George realises he can move between these worlds, and does not know which of them is real. Robert Lepage directs, adapting John Mighton's play, with Tilda Swinton as Joyce and Tom McCamus as George. Ninety-three minutes. Lepage came to film from the theatre, and this is constructed like a puzzle: the solution is not withheld from the audience, but it is not handed over easily either.
