What The Confessional Is About
Pierre Lamontagne comes back to Quebec after years away, for his father's funeral, and meets his adopted brother Marc. Marc is questioning who he is and looking for his own father, and the search takes them to 1952. That year Alfred Hitchcock was shooting I Confess in Quebec City, and Rachel, sixteen and working in the presbytery, was pregnant. Robert Lepage's first film braids the two periods together and cuts in real footage from Hitchcock's picture. A system in which sin is confessed but never spoken becomes both the church authority of that Quebec and the form of the film itself.
