What No. 20 Madras Mail Is About
Joshiy’s 1990 Malayalam film starts on the train from Thiruvananthapuram to Madras. A young woman dies, three friends are blamed for it, and rather than wait to be arrested they get off and go looking for whoever actually did it. Roughly half the picture was shot inside the carriages, and the narrow corridors, the compartment doors and the pressure of the gaps between stations are enough to build the whole thing on. Dennis Joseph wrote it from a story by Harikumar. Mohanlal leads, and Mammootty appears in a long cameo as himself, a part that reportedly came about on set when Mohanlal improvised his name into a line where no famous actor had yet been chosen.
