What Nocturne Is About

In 1940s Los Angeles the composer Keith Vincent is found dead at home. He was known for his affairs, and photographs of many women hang on his wall. The inquest closes it as suicide. Detective Joe Warne is not convinced and starts finding the women in the photographs one by one, on his own time. The persistence costs him his job. Edwin L. Marin's film is one of the mid-sized examples of the postwar noir wave. George Raft plays the detective, with Lynn Bari and Virginia Huston in the cast. What is interesting about it is the detective's method: he does not lean on anyone or break down doors, he just asks and waits. Drawing him as a quiet man who lives with his mother is also unusual for the genre.
