What Northwest Passage Is About
During the French and Indian War two young men join Rogers' Rangers under Major Rogers. The film is mostly about the raid on St. Francis and the marches before and after it: weeks through swamp, ending in hunger and exhaustion. Adapted from Kenneth Roberts's novel, directed by King Vidor, with Spencer Tracy as Rogers. Technically it was among the most ambitious colour productions of its day. What is most argued over now is that it presents the raid on the Abenaki village at St. Francis as heroic epic. The passage of the title is never reached in the film at all.
