What Obit Is About
Vanessa Gould’s documentary sits down with the obituary writers of the New York Times and asks how a life gets compressed into five hundred words. She came to the subject after the paper wrote an obituary for Eric Joisel, an origami artist she had filmed years earlier. The film follows the work in order: choosing who gets written about that day, making the phone calls to families, building sentences against a closing deadline. One of its best stretches goes down to the basement archive, ten thousand drawers of clippings once maintained by thirty people and now left to a single archivist. What emerges is less a film about death than a film about who decides which lives become history, and on what evidence.
