The men of the island rebuild the weirs to remember, and to make others remember, what their fathers did. Michel Brault, Pierre Perrault and Marcel Carrière worked with portable cameras and quiet sound recorders, and this counts as the first feature of the movement called direct cinema, which Perrault preferred to call lived cinema. Made at the National Film Board of Canada, it was the first Quebec film selected for Cannes. The island’s language, its sound and its way of telling are the subject itself.
