What One Day in the Life of Andrei Arsenevich Is About
In this film Chris Marker is describing Andrei Tarkovsky. The camera finds him at work on his last film, The Sacrifice, in the last year of his life. Marker uses footage from the set together with passages from Tarkovsky’s earlier work. In that way he follows the trail of a method and of a way of seeing. The account is neither an obituary nor a biography; it is one director looking at another. Illness and work stand inside the same frame. Marina Vlady and Margarita Terekhova appear in the film as well. The fifty five minutes are given to a single period of shooting. The work was made for television. Chris Marker’s French documentary was completed in 1999.
