The film is made entirely of still photographs. Chris Marker took them himself in twenty six countries. Three voices run over the images, arguing about what a picture means and what travel is for. The account is not a travel film; its subject is the act of looking itself. The difference between the still image and the moving one is the real matter. The question of what a moment frozen by a photograph becomes in cinema keeps coming back. The forty nine minutes are used like an essay. Pierre Vaneck is among the voices. Chris Marker’s film, a joint French and German production, was completed in 1966.
