Jean-Claude Dauphin What The Last Bolshevik Is About
Chris Marker's documentary is made of six letters addressed to the Soviet director Aleksandr Medvedkin. Medvedkin was a convinced communist all his life and his films were banned in his own country again and again; Happiness, his masterpiece, stayed out of sight for years. Marker tells that double condition, an artist caught between ideology and independence, alongside the story of twentieth century Russia. The letter form is one of Marker's favourite instruments and works here as a way of thinking in essay form. A film that tries to see a whole century through one life.
