What Operation Odessa Is About
Operation Odessa documents a completely real event: in 1997 a federal task force uncovered a plan by Russian mobster Ludwig "Tarzan" Fainberg, Miami luxury car dealer Juan Almeida, and smuggler Nelson "Tony" Yester to sell a Soviet military submarine to the Cali Cartel for 35 million dollars to transport cocaine. Director Tiller Russell spent seven years completing the documentary; to interview Fainberg, he smuggled ten thousand dollars taped to his leg into a Panamanian prison and bribed a guard. Fainberg later escaped that prison and made his way back to Moscow via Cuba. Who it's for: anyone wanting to learn about a real submarine sale plot through the director's seven year effort, which included sneaking into a prison. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a fictional crime thriller, since this is a documentary.
