Our Last Tango

María Nieves and Juan Carlos Copes met when they were fourteen and seventeen and danced together for nearly fifty years. They were the best known couple in the history of tango. They were also together, separated, fell out with each other and went back on stage again. Both are now in their eighties and are telling what happened in detail for the first time. Germán Kral directed the documentary, with Wim Wenders among its producers. The film is not only interviews: young dancers from Buenos Aires turn the moments being described into choreography and stage them again. The two kinds of telling run side by side. Nieves and Copes speak separately and often remember the same events differently; the film does not say which of them is right.
