Andrea de Gortes What Palio Is About
The Palio of Siena is among the oldest horse races still being run, held twice a year in the city’s square between its districts. Cosima Spender’s documentary is less about the race than about the bargaining around it: bribes, deals and last-minute alliances count for as much as riding well. Two men sit at its centre, Gigi Bruschelli, who has dominated the race for a decade and needs two more wins for the record, and Giovanni Atzeni, the young rider he trained who now stands in his way. Spender builds it not as a sports film but as a closed city settling its own accounts, and the race footage is still breathtaking. It played at Tribeca in 2015 and won the award there for best documentary editing.
