What Pathemari Is About
Pallikkal Narayanan boards one of the wooden dhows the film is named after in the early sixties and sails for the Gulf, with no aim beyond keeping his family fed. From there the story runs to the present, telling fifty years of migration through one man's life: dangerous crossings giving way to settled expatriate communities, remittances holding up households back in Kerala, and the years of absence those remittances cost. Salim Ahamed wrote and directed it in 2015, with Mammootty as Narayanan. It was named best Malayalam film at the sixty third National Film Awards. What it is about is not getting rich but what is left by the time anyone goes home.
