What Paul Simon: Under African Skies Is About
The documentary follows Paul Simon’s return to South Africa on the twenty fifth anniversary of his album Graceland. The album was recorded in Johannesburg with local musicians in 1986, and that decision drew heavy criticism: the United Nations had called for a cultural boycott of the apartheid regime, and Simon was accused of breaking it. The film tells both that argument and the way the album opened a road in music; years later Simon speaks face to face with those who defended the boycott. In Joe Berlinger’s hundred and two minute American documentary, Quincy Jones, Peter Gabriel, David Byrne, Harry Belafonte and Paul McCartney also speak. It was completed in 2012 and closes with a reunion concert with the South African musicians.
