What Personal Effects Is About
Issa López's film shows four friends at two separate times. At eighteen, just out of school, Marina, Ignacio, Adam and Mimi want the same things from life: fame, success, perfect skin, and the one endless love waiting just around the corner. By their thirties none of it has arrived. All four are alone, stuck and angry, forced to work out where it went wrong and to find some emergency repair for their lives. The film refuses to turn this into an instructive story about growing up and plays it as a bitter comedy instead, where the list of losses includes hair as well as dreams. It is one of the few Mexican films to look squarely at being thirty.
