What Peter and the Farm Is About
Peter Dunning is sixty-eight and runs a hundred and eighty-seven acres of organic farm in Vermont on his own. A former artist, a heavy drinker, a leftover of the sixties counterculture, he has burned his bridges with his wives and his children, and on hard winter nights his company is the sheep and the pigs he keeps. Tony Stone films him across a year. The hardest thing in it is how casually Peter talks on camera about his own death, most often about killing himself. Stone has known him since childhood, and what audiences kept returning to after screenings was the question the film cannot avoid: where a documentary maker’s responsibility to an endangered subject begins.
