Pretty Crazy

Sun-ji is an apprentice in a bakery; gentle, shy, and by day she raises her voice to nobody. When night comes she becomes someone else: shouting, fighting, afraid of nothing, and remembering none of it the next morning. Her family has hidden this for years. In the end they hire a neighbour, whose job is to watch the night version and clear up after her. He likes the day version and sets out to find the cause. Lee Sang-geun directs. Yoona plays Sun-ji and Ahn Bo-hyun the neighbour, with Sung Dong-il and Joo Hyun-young in the cast. Lee Sang-geun had made Exit, another film that kept a disaster comedy inside a genre shape. The narrative sits between romantic comedy and the fantastic, and the difference between the two states is used as comic material. The idea underneath is suppressed anger: the price of the daytime politeness is paid at night. Yoona plays in two separate registers and the comedy rests entirely on the switch. The weakness is the second half; when the narrative reaches its explanation the comedy drops and the emotional tone takes over. Who it is for: viewers who like Korean romantic comedy and genre mixes. Who it is not for: the premise repeats, the humour is broad, and the ending is predictable.
