Prince Vladimir

Yuri Kulakov's 2006 Russian animation follows the transformation of Vladimir, Prince of Kiev, from a pagan ruler into a sovereign who accepts Christianity. The telling is aimed at children but the subject is heavy: fratricide, a struggle for power and a people changing its faith. The film is among the large-scale hand-drawn animations made in Russia after a long gap and is technically careful; the crowded battle sequences and period design are good. Its limit is ideological: the conversion is presented as unquestioned progress, and pagan belief is represented only through the wicked priest Krivzha. Some scenes are harsh for small children. Who it's for: viewers interested in Russian animation and historical narrative. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a balanced account of history, or families looking for something for young children.
