Purge

Estonia, 1992. Aliide, an old woman, lives alone in an isolated house. One morning she finds a young woman in her yard: Zara, who has escaped the Russian mafia that held her as a sex slave. Aliide takes her in without admitting to herself why. Their histories gradually fasten together, and what Aliide did, and stayed silent about, under Stalin and during the Siberian deportations comes out. Antti Jokinen adapted it from Sofi Oksanen's novel. It tells Estonia's twentieth century through the silence of two women. Laura Birn leads. Heavy going, and the weight is not for show.
