Quest

The documentary follows a family in North Philadelphia. They are the Raineys. Everyone calls Christopher by the name Quest. His wife Christine’a works at a women’s shelter. Quest brings money in with paper rounds. There is a small music studio in the basement. On Fridays young people from the neighbourhood come to it. They freestyle there. The studio has become a kind of shelter of its own. The violence outside still gets through the door. Their daughter PJ is eight when the filming starts and grows up on camera. One day she is hit by a stray bullet, and the family meets it with a quiet resilience. Filmed over eight years, across Obama’s re-election and Trump’s campaign, the hundred and four minute documentary is an American production Jonathan Olshefski finished in 2017.
