Deepa, who lives in Delhi, is preparing to marry Sanjay, a warm and sociable bank clerk. When she travels to Bombay for a job interview she runs into Navin, from a relationship that ended badly years earlier, and the few days she spends in that city shake her whole decision. Rather than say who the right man is, the film is about how a woman cannot be sure of her own feeling. Adapted from a short story by Mannu Bhandari, the account gives everything from beginning to end through Deepa’s inner voice. Unusually for the period, a working woman who makes her own decisions stands at the centre of the story. Vidya Sinha, Amol Palekar and Dinesh Thakur appear in Basu Chatterjee’s hundred and ten minute Indian film, completed in 1974 with music by Salil Chowdhury.
