What Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman Is About
Raju, a young engineer from a small town, moves to Bombay with big plans. Work is not easy to find, and he stays with friends until he gets taken on at a construction site. Once his career opens up he moves into the world of the rich and starts losing himself in it. Then he walks into a trap and has to look at what he gave up. Aziz Mirza's film is early Shah Rukh Khan and one of the pictures that made him a star, opposite Juhi Chawla, with whom he would work for years. The shape is familiar: the man from the provinces, the big city, the climb and its cost. What actually distinguishes it is how much of ordinary Bombay it puts on screen, the sites and the small rooms.
