Bijon Bhattacharya R Ranen Ray Choudhury What Reason, Debate and a Story Is About
Four men, each odd in his own way, set out on a journey; their aim is to speak with the estranged wife of the main character and to reason with her. Along the way they argue: about politics, about art, about responsibility and about where their own lives have arrived. The account follows no straight plot; conversations, songs and passages addressed directly to the viewer are woven together. The director himself plays the main character, and the work has been read as his own reckoning. It came to be counted among the most argued over works of Bengali cinema in the seventies. Tripti Mitra also appears in Ritwik Ghatak’s hundred and twenty minute Indian film, completed in 1974.
