Rebel Dykes

Harri Shanahan and Siân A. Williams's 2021 documentary is about a subculture in eighties London. A group of lesbians out of the anarchist scene built their own venues and their own art. The documentary also covers their conflict with the mainstream movement of the time. Arguments over sex, BDSM and free expression split that movement in those years, and the narrative does not hide it. Because archive footage is scarce, animation is used. The participants speak today. The tone is lively and direct. Who it's for: viewers of queer history and subculture documentary. Who it's not for: viewers uncomfortable with explicit sexual content; the documentary takes it up directly.
