What Ring of Bright Water Is About

Adapted from Gavin Maxwell's memoir, the film opens with Graham stuck in a dead-end job in London. He takes in an otter, names him Mij, and realising the city will not do for either of them they move to a remote coastal village in western Scotland. Most of the film happens there: tides, rocks, birds and the daily life of an animal. Graham grows close to Mary, the local doctor, and the three of them settle into an arrangement. It runs calm and cheerful for a long while and then arrives somewhere far harder than a family film usually goes, which is why the ending is left unspoiled here. Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna lead.
