What Nikki, Wild Dog of the North Is About
Disney’s 1961 wilderness picture comes from James Oliver Curwood’s novel Nomads of the North. Nikki, a malamute travelling by canoe through the Canadian Rockies with his owner André Dupas, ends up separated from him and roped to Neewa, a bear cub whose mother has been killed by a grizzly. The two survive the year together; when winter arrives and the bear dens up, the dog is left alone and falls into the hands of a trapper who fights dogs for money. Jack Couffer and Don Haldane built most of it out of patient animal footage with human dialogue kept to a minimum. At the end Nikki finds Neewa again, sees that the grown bear belongs in the wild, and stays with André.
