Rise

A classical ballet dancer who falls on stage and injures her ankle learns she will not dance again. She goes to an arts centre in Brittany to recover and meets a contemporary dance company there. The film does not build recovery as a return to what she was; the narrative is really about a body learning to do something else, with the rehearsals shot in long unbroken takes. Most of the dancers are real dancers. Cedric Klapisch directed. Marion Barbeau leads and is a Paris Opera dancer. Hofesh Shechter appears with his own company. Who it's for: those who like dance films and stories of recovery. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a tight plot; the film gives its weight to the movement.
