What Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It Is About
Mariem Perez Riera's 2021 documentary covers the seventy-year career of the actress Rita Moreno. She came from Puerto Rico to New York as a child and for a long time could only take certain kinds of role in Hollywood. That constraint is at the centre. Moreno describes directly which roles were offered, how her make-up was darkened and how her accent was demanded; that the same offers continued even after she won awards is one of the narrative's turning points. Moreno also speaks openly about violence in her own relationships and a suicide attempt; the documentary does not leave these outside the career narrative. The tone is celebratory but not one-directional. Who it's for: those interested in Hollywood history and the representation of Latin American performers. Who it's not for: viewers sensitive to intimate partner violence and suicide; the film addresses both directly.
