What Riverside Mukolitta Is About
Just out of prison, Takeshi Yamada takes a job at a factory in Toyama that makes salted squid and moves into a fifty year old apartment building by the river. He plans to live without speaking to anyone, but his neighbour Shimada, who lets himself in uninvited, gets in the way, and Shiori, the young widowed landlady who lives with her daughter, along with the other people around him, gradually work their way into his days. When news of his father’s death arrives, these are the people beside him. Naoko Ogigami’s hundred and twenty minute Japanese film was adapted from her own novel; Kenichi Matsuyama plays Yamada and Tsuyoshi Muro plays Shimada, with Hikari Mitsushima and Hidetaka Yoshioka in the cast. It was completed in 2021 and tells small happiness through food and everyday work.
