Romeo & Juliet

In Verona the children of two hostile families meet at a ball. The story proceeds as everyone knows it. What is actually argued about in this version is the text: Julian Fellowes replaced part of Shakespeare's verse with lines of his own. The film justified this as accessibility, but for anyone who knows the play the result is an odd mixture, and most of the criticism came from there. Carlo Carlei directed, with Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth in the leads. It was shot on location in Italy, including Verona and Mantua. Before watching: if you have read or seen the play, the altered lines will distract you. It is a careful period production visually, but for fidelity to the text look to other adaptations.
