What Rondo Is About
Mladen, a judge who lives alone, plays chess every Sunday with his friend Fedja, a sculptor. The visits turn into a habit. In time a relationship begins between Mladen and Neda, Fedja’s wife. The triangle forms almost without being noticed. The chessboard stands at the centre of the film, and the moves on it reflect the states of the characters. The film builds its tension not through events but through repetition. The same Sunday being lived over and over is the form of the account. Stevo Žigon and Milena Dravić take the leads, with Relja Bašić also in the cast. Zvonimir Berković’s ninety five minute Yugoslav film was completed in 1966.
