What Rose Is About
Masuria, the summer of 1945. Róża has lost her husband, a Masurian conscripted into the German army, and is alone on the farm with no protection at all against Soviet soldiers or looters. Tadeusz, a former Home Army officer who watched his own wife killed and is now hiding who he is, moves in with her. The new authorities are putting Masurians through a humiliating nationality verification, and Róża counts as German. Wojciech Smarzowski shows the rapes and the ethnic clearing without softening any of it.
