Rose

Inger is in her forties and has a diagnosis of schizophrenia; she has lived for years in institutions and on medication. Her sister and brother in law decide to take her on a coach tour: from Denmark to Paris with a large group. On the road everyone gets to know each other and at first Inger tries to fit in. Then it breaks down; the group is uncomfortable, her sister is embarrassed, and it becomes clear that her reason for going to Paris is not the tour. Niels Arden Oplev writes and directs. Sofie Gråbøl plays Inger. The narrative rests on the director's own sister; Oplev said so openly, and the film is written from inside a family. Its best quality is how the group reacts. The people on the tour are not ill intentioned; they do not know how to behave, and the film shows that ignorance in detail. Sofie Gråbøl is known in Denmark from television and plays the part without asking for pity; the character is at times unfair, coarse and exhausting. The second strand is the sisters: the younger has carried the responsibility for years and carries the anger of it too. Its limit is structure; the road film passes through its expected stops and the ending comes close to an emotional resolution. Who it is for: viewers who follow Scandinavian drama and films about mental health. Who it is not for: the subject is heavy, some scenes are uncomfortable, and the narrative runs in a familiar shape.
