What Rudeboy: The Story of Trojan Records Is About

Trojan Records was founded in London by Lee Gopthal, an immigrant of the Windrush generation, and the label went from sixties ska and rock steady to putting reggae into the British charts. Nicolas Jack Davies’ documentary tells this not as the story of a record company but as the story of Jamaican and British youth finding each other, a record of a shared culture built in working-class neighbourhoods, of clothes, dancing and sound. What the film does not skip is the racism rising in the same years and the fact that the musicians had to work through it. Interviews, archive footage and cinematic reconstructions run into one another. Lee "Scratch" Perry, Toots Hibbert, Pauline Black, Don Letts and Dandy Livingstone are among those who speak. It played at the BFI London Film Festival in 2018.
