What Ruslan and Ludmila Is About
In the middle of the wedding of Prince Ruslan and Ludmila, the daughter of Prince Vladimir, the bride is carried off; the ones who do it are the evil sorcerer Chernomor and the witch Naina. Ruslan sets out to rescue her, but he is not the only one on the road: three men who once courted Ludmila go after her as well. The journey passes through enchanted country, giant heads and trials. The film comes from Pushkin’s poem and builds the tale with large sets and crowded scenes. That so many men go after the stolen bride puts a second race inside the story, because not all of them are riding with the same intent as Ruslan. Aleksandr Ptushko’s hundred and fifty minute Soviet film was completed in 1972.
