Aleksandr Kleberer What The Stone Flower Is About
Aleksandr Ptushko’s 1946 film adapts Pavel Bazhov’s Ural folk tales. Danila, apprentice to the old stone carver Prokopich, grows into a master said to hear the soul of his material, and then meets the Mistress of the Copper Mountain, who asks him for a flower made of stone. What the film is really about is the way the wish to make something perfect pulls a man away from every living person around him. It is counted as the Soviet Union’s first colour feature and was shot on Agfacolor negative seized in Germany after the war. It won the prize for best colour at Cannes in 1946 and was seen by more than twenty-three million people at home that year.
