What A Tale of Lost Times Is About
Four wicked wizards manage to make themselves young again using time stolen from lazy children who were wasting it anyway. The children pay for it: they wake up as old people. Nobody believes them, nobody will listen, and they have very little time to get their own years back. Aleksandr Ptushko's 1964 film comes from Yevgeny Schwartz's tale. It is a story with a lesson in it that never wags a finger; it puts the idea of time as something spendable to children in the shape of a scary story. Seventy-six minutes, and it never drags. One of the best remembered pieces of Soviet children's cinema.
