What The Tale of Tsar Saltan Is About
Driven out of the court by her sisters' scheming, the young Tsarina is put into a cask with her infant son and thrown into the sea. They survive the storm and wash up on a remote island, where the boy becomes a grown man in an instant by magic. There he falls in love with a Swan Princess in human form, while wanting to reach the father he has never met, Tsar Saltan. Merchants passing the island carry word back and forth, and the sisters keep lying. Aleksandr Ptushko adapted Pushkin's versified tale of 1831. A Mosfilm production, and its visual signature is carved wooden lions that weep, peasants in ritual masks, and faces turned red by candlelight.
