Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie

Tanya Degurechaff looks nine years old and fights as a magical officer in the Imperial army. She is in fact a Japanese salaryman who died in another world; an entity reincarnated him in this body with the aim of forcing him to believe. Tanya wants only a safe desk posting and is trying to win the war as fast as possible to get one. Yutaka Uemura directs for Studio NUT, from Carlo Zen's light novel series. The film continues the 2017 television series and starts where it stopped; this time the opposition is the Federation army and Mary Sue, a young mage who holds Tanya responsible for her father's death. The series' idea is to install the military logic of war inside a child's body. Tanya does not act on feeling; she calculates costs, speaks of human resources, and defends war crimes on grounds of efficiency. The discomfort comes precisely from that. At feature scale the aerial combat is markedly more ambitious than in the series and is the most praised material. Who it is for: viewers who like military fantasy anime and alternative history. Who it is not for: without the series the rules and characters are unexplained, and the protagonist is deliberately repellent in a way that will not carry for everyone.
